But how do you really maintain the “freshness” of these memorabilia (wedding bouquet, wedding cake, wedding gown, and photos) for time immemorial?

Preserving the Wedding Cake
Traditionally, newly-wed couples take off the top tier of their wedding cake and freeze it for their first anniversary. Assign a “cake captain,” have the icing separate from the rest, and transport them in a sealed box. First, cover the top cake in several layers of plastic wrap. Tip: Don’t use aluminum foil as it will give off a nasty metallic odor and you don’t want to eat aluminum one year later, do you? Chill the cake first within 24 hours after the reception day to harden the icing (so it won’t stick to the plastic wrapper.) Finally, seal it in an air-tight plastic container and store in a special compartment in the freezer.

The very reason why you are doing this is because you want to taste the very sentimental value of your wedding cake and its icing on your first wedding anniversary. Make sure you choose cakes that are not too delicate as they dry quickly over time. Suggested cakes are almond, carrot cake, chocolate, and hazelnut. Freezer faux pas: White cake, fresh fruit, and whipped cream fillings. However, most wedding cake designers and makers strongly recommend consuming the cake after two months. Just like any thing stored in the freezer for longer periods of time, cakes will stale. Go for nostalgia (say, take a photo!), and not for gastronomic consumption, instead, if you opt for a year’s preservation of your wedding cake.

Preserving Your Wedding Flower
A well-preserved wedding bouquet is a simple, yet elegant keepsake through the years. As time passes by, it can be used as a memento and a stunning decorative in your home. Make a conscientious effort, during the entire stretch of your wedding day, not to destroy, bruise, or badly dry out your wedding flowers. Preserving them in their prime conditions add impact to a lasting legacy of your wedding. There are three highly recommended ways:

Buy a low-cost (or you can get these in bulk) silica gel. You can submerge them or keep in an air-tight compartment together with your wedding flowers. This silica gel resembles like coarse white sand in appearance, or mini-pebble-like qualities, however they possess many fine pores within and therefore extremely absorbent. Wrap the bouquet with tissue paper, to prevent from crushing with the silica gel (or even during house transfers or arrangements/movements.)

Another method is through flower select press. Flatten these blooms with a flower press and then, frame them later on.

The third is freeze-drying. This is the most optimal procedure to preserve your wedding flowers for higher longevity. And they still look true-to-life (retain shape and color.) To freeze-dry is a technique for which a material is frozen, and then undergoes dehydration via sublimation (scientific process by which water passes from frozen to a gaseous state.)

This preservation process, however, is costly and only few businesses or professional individuals (the chances, if not, are nil), are offering it in town. The whole process involves placing the material in a vacuum chamber, where the freeze-drying takes place. It is non-invasive and does not yield chemical damage to your wedding bouquet.

Some few things that will destroy your intimate wedding memories in the process: Humidity, sunlight, and human negligence. If you properly preserve these flowers, especially have it taken cared by professionals, they can definitely last a lifetime, even up to 100 years.

Preserving Your Wedding Gown

Immediately within a span of one month, after your wedding day, personally inspect and take your wedding gown to the dry cleaners. Stains and smudges can then be removed. Over time, they will stick to your garments permanently. Get advice how these dry cleaning shops will handle your wedding gown. Care must be taken, especially to the beadings and embroidery (must be turned inside-out during the cleaning process), so ask your friendly laundromat to carefully handwash the stains only. The best “container preservation” is storing them first within an acid-free environment (not plastic). Wrap them in clean white sheet or muslin and store in a clean, dry, room temperature before it is submitted.

An example would be Phototac. Phototac is a cold lamination process, a specialized protective adhesive coating for photographs. This prevents stains, smudges and discoloration.
